IES San Francisco 2020 Pasta Party

October 22, 2020 - 6:00-7:00 pm

IES San Francisco Section begins its 2020-21 program year with our popular Pasta Party. This year’s keynote speaker is Jonathan Plumpton of Luma Lighting Design on the Lux Awards interior Lighting Design winning project - Kaiser Center Lobby.

Situated along Oakland's Lake Merritt, this office building, originally constructed in 1960, had suffered from an awkward and confusing two-floor entry lobby plan that was in need of a complete architectural redesign. The design involved opening up and connecting the two floors, providing a smart and inviting, light- filled space that creates cues to the orientation of the entry to tenants and visitors alike. The lighting had to support these goals while providing a timeless, sophisticated and modern layering and integration of the lighting within the whole composition. Vertical and horiz ontal lighting reveals were utiliz ed to provide soft, glare- free illumination to define different planes and materials. Supplemental downlighting and wallwashers were minimized and organized in clusters to allow for a contemporary and clean expression of the ceiling plane. A single feature pendant lighting fixture anchors the space vertically and in plan. All the fixtures employ LED light sources, dimmable to 1%. The design utilizes a programmable dimming system to provide soft fades between scenes cued to the functionality of different times of day and night, to provide fine-tuned comfort, and energy offsets to improve on the already efficient design with an LPD of 0.4 watts per square foot (less than half the allowable energy usage under Title 24).
