Scholarship Opportunities

There are 3 educational scholarships supported by the IES San Francisco Section for students interested in and studying lighting topics. These are awarded annually in the Spring. In addition, some grants and scholarships may be available at the national level.

The Tom Tolen Scholarships:

Created to honor the memory of the late Tom Tolen who demonstrated his passion towards lighting and energy conservation in his work and who was an exemplary teacher who nurtured lighting students and advocated for lighting education.

This scholarship was created to support students in trade school, junior college, college or university who have a clear interest in lighting; or who have shown evidence of innovative thought and activity in their study of lighting or the use of light and energy.

The scholarship is awarded to students to support and recognize them for their educational accomplishments.

The Robert W. Thunen Scholarship

Instituted to honor the memory of the late Robert W. Thunen who was instrumental in many northern California education programs as well as a regional engineer with a territory across several counties in Northern California, Nevada, Oregon or Washington.

It was designed to support the educational interests of an upper-level undergraduate or a graduate student undertaking a lighting-centered project as part of their studies.

The Alan Lucas Educational Scholarship

Established as part of a generous bequest from the Estate of Alan Lucas, a distinguished interior designer with a great interest in lighting design. It was established to carry out the late Mr. Lucas’s intention “to fund scholarships and other educational programs” in the field of lighting design and lighting applications.

It supports an upper-level undergraduate or a graduate student in a 4-year college or university in Northern California.
