IES San Francisco Section begins its 2019-20 program year with our popular Pasta Party. This year’s speakers are Eric Johnson of EJA Lighting Design, Inc. and David Duncan of Silver Oak’s Alexander Valley Winery. This project was the winner of the 2019 SF Lux Awards Award of Distinction- First Place and the Award of Merit for Energy & Environmental Design. The project combines state-of-the-art vinification with traditional barn- inspired architecture using reclaimed materials, creating a modern yet sustainable facility. This is the first production winery to be awarded LEED Platinum certification for Building Design and Construction, with LBC certification in progress. Enhanced by innovative lighting features and techniques, designed to be architecturally respectful, energy efficient, but above all, exquisitely luminous, it’s also the first SF Lux award winner to be a net-positive project. Project lighting designer Eric Johnson and owner David Duncan team up to tell the story behind this remarkable project.  

Eric Johnson
A second generation lighting designer, Eric’s career spans over forty years. After working in the family lighting business since high school (Artistic Lighting & Electric), which included years of lighting design, manufacturing and installation of framing projectors, and later working as a lighting designer with Spectrum Engineering in Salt Lake City, Eric established his own firm, Eric Johnson Lighting Design, in 1995. In 2000, he created Eric Johnson Associates, Inc.  and began hiring a team of lighting, controls and CAD professionals. As the team continued to grow, in 2019 Eric Johnson Associates, Inc., became EJA Lighting Design, Inc. Eric’s areas of expertise include lighting for traditional to contemporary architecture, designing sophisticated lighting control systems, evaluating the latest energy efficient lighting products and technology, and incorporating them into his designs.

Eric has collaborated with world-renown architects and designers, managed projects across the U.S. and abroad, and has advised many lighting manufacturers and lighting technology companies on product design, functionality and technical viability. His work consistently wins respect from colleagues and has garnered a solid reputation in the lighting design industry.

Tony LeBlanc

Since joining Silver Oak in 1992, Tony has spent his career building “controlled” environments. He is best known for steering the construction of Silver Oak’s two LEED Platinum certified facilities and has overseen winery operations for over two decades.

In 1999, the Duncan family purchased the winery in Calistoga that became the home of Twomey Cellars. Tony did due diligence on the property and was promoted to Chief Operating Officer. By that time, he also assumed responsibility for the Oakville winery. Then, when the Duncans sought out a Sonoma County facility in 2005, Tony helped oversee the acquisition and renovation of a Healdsburg winery that became the Pinot Noir facility for Twomey. With four facilities to manage, Tony was promoted to General Manager.

In 2012 that Tony met the opportunity of a lifetime: to supervise the development of a new Alexander Valley winery with wine quality and sustainability top of mind. “Building green is important—but not at any cost,” he says. “For the Alexander Valley facility, every choice had to be both cost-efficient and sustainable. Simply being green makes no sense, unless other projects could follow our path and make similar choices.” The net-positive energy facility opened in April 2018 and has since been proclaimed the world’s greenest winery.

Today, as President of Silver Oak and Twomey Cellars, Tony leads the winemaking, vineyard, retail and hospitality teams and is responsible for all capital improvements and the company’s operational expenses. He is also on the board of directors for Winegrowers of Napa County and Sonoma Alliance for Vineyards and Environment.
